The woman flared up as the hedge row got out of control – ‘She’s a vengeful witch!’

Living next to a nightmare neighbor who can’t see reason is the worst. Difficult neighbors can not only make your life miserable, but their decisions can affect your home as well. A woman who has been left in a difficult position has lashed out at her neighbor for refusing to remove a tree stump. The homeowner claims that the tree’s roots prevent her from putting up a fence in her garden, as she’d like. And the neighbor has refused to cooperate, even though he and his partner have offered to foot the bill.

However, not everyone expressed sympathy for the woman when she took to the internet to complain about an elderly neighbor who lived next door, calling her a “vengeful witch.” The online boast sparked a passionate debate, with many unable to agree which neighbor was in the right.

In the woman’s post to Mumsnet, the homeowner explained that the trouble first started when she and her partner started work on their new home.

His garden was boarded up by a private hedge “in various states of repair”, and he found that “about a third of the hedge that forms the border with our neighbors was actually falling down”.

Eager to make improvements, the couple decided to remove the hedge after consulting their neighbour. The woman then explained that they live next door to an “elderly neighbour” who was not keen on the plan, as she was concerned about the safety of her dogs.

However, as the pet owner had chicken wire and picket fencing on the other side of the hedge, she “reluctantly agreed”. At that time, they also told him that they would put up a new fence, but wanted to wait until the fall.

However, the work was interrupted by a neighbor when he decided to cut down a tree near the edge of his garden.

While the tree clearly sits on a neighbor’s property, according to the residents’ agreed garden boundary, the remaining stump “leans over,” and the exposed roots prevent the new homeowners from erecting their own fence.

As such, the couple offered to split the cost of removing the stump, but the neighbor said she could not afford the fee at this time.

The couple responded by offering to pay in advance if the neighbor could pay the money back next year. However, the neighbor later decided that she did not want to pay at all, and when the couple offered to pay the entire bill, she refused, saying that she would not allow them access to her garden.

Recalling the exchange, the woman wrote: “I tried to remain calm and advised him that it would be nearly impossible to re-fence without removing the stub.

“Then she went on to boast that we shouldn’t have left it off-limits – then on top of that the tree she arranged to be removed was actually ours because the roots are coming from our garden!

“But she removed it without discussing with us and has now made it impossible for us to remove it? She says she is going to plant some conifers along the border.”

The homeowner said she “lost it” after hearing her neighbor’s answer and didn’t know what to do. The woman claimed: “She is deliberately being an old lady.

“I think considering every move we’ve made, we’ve hardly made it to this property and started tearing it apart and causing disruption to it.

“Part of me wants to say ‘f**k you’, tear down the whole hedge on that side and put up a two-metre fence.” She also felt that the elderly woman had wrongly expected the couple to take responsibility for their dogs.

In a later comment, the homeowner wrote: “I told my husband it was not our responsibility to keep his dogs from walking outside. He acted like it was our responsibility. She seems such a vengeful witch. “

However, commentators were quick to defend the neighbor. A person who goes by the username of Keensier replied: “You seem quite hardworking and like you are trying to start unnecessary drama for no reason.”

User Remaker wrote: “You haven’t been so considerate though, have you? You’re doing it on your own timeline, when it suits you. She wasn’t happy and you plowed anyway, pulled the hedge because It was convenient.” For you even though you couldn’t change it at the time.

“She’s responding in kind, not putting herself out there for your convenience. Well your whole post is ageist. Stop talking about her age, it’s irrelevant. As far as ‘witch’ is unnecessary.” Several other comments also criticized the author of the post for being “ageist” in his choice of words.

But other respondents shared empathy, suggesting they saw their side of the problem. User Tinkerbyebye suggested: “If that’s your limit I’d just put up the highest fence I could and not answer.” Meanwhile, another replied: “He has no right to decide what you do with your boundary.”
