‘Tap water is fine’ when watering peace lilies – houseplant experts share key care tips

Peace lilies are great houseplants with glossy green leaves and white flowers. They are believed to bring good luck, peace and hope. Owners of this plant must take care, however, as it can be sensitive to many different things, including too much water, which is often the case when the seasons change.

Miriam Ghani of Haute Florist said: “Peace lilies thrive in indirect sunlight which is perfect for winter when our days are so short.

“Your peace lily would be fine in your bedroom, living room, or dining room; try placing it on a side table in the corner so it gets some light but isn’t too direct.”

Experts recommend misting the leaves with a spray bottle regularly to help raise the humidity level. Peace lily owners can also place a wet tray of gravel or pebbles at the bottom of the plant.

However, Merriam said to use caution when staining this houseplant, being sure to focus on the roots rather than the actual flowers to avoid bacterial growth.

Hammonds also spoke to Samantha Jones, gardening and plants expert from MyJobQuote.co.uk, for advice on how to care for houseplants.

She said: “Bringing plants into your home can be beneficial for freshening up the atmosphere.

“Apart from being visually appealing and improving the aesthetics of your home, plants have a calming effect on us.

“Overall, caring for your plant is essential, so it’s important to make sure you give it the right care.”

Although each houseplant will have different needs, Samantha shares her “essential” tips to follow.

She explained: “Keep the soil in your pot moist, neither too wet nor too dry.

“Make sure the plant pot has drainage holes in the bottom so your plant never sits in water. Place your plant near a light source, whether natural or artificial.

“Lastly, if you are new to gardening, you should try to stick to low-maintenance plants like Aloe or Monstera.”
