KFC Apologizes For Using Kristallnacht To Promote Cheesy Chicken In Germany

The KFC fast food chain in Germany then issued an apology on Wednesday sent an app alert suggesting customers celebrate the anniversary of the Nazi-led attacks on Jews by eating cheesy chicken.

The chain’s German division sent a message to followers on its app that read: “It’s Memorial Day for Kristallnacht! Treat your crunchy chicken to more tender cheese. Now at KFCeese!” BBC reported.

Not surprisingly, many people found KFC’s promotion tasteless. Kristallnacht, or “Night of the Broken Glass”, is considered the beginning of the Holocaust. Two nights of violence on November 9–10, 1938, destroyed 267 synagogues and thousands of other Jewish-owned businesses in Nazi Germany, as well as killing 90 Jewish people and arresting thousands.

According to the BBC, Germany takes the anniversary of Kristalnacht seriously, with several commemorative events depicting the killing of more than 6 million Jewish people by the Nazis.

About an hour after the alert, KFC issued a follow-up on the app blaming the tasteless propaganda. “An error in our system,” and added: “We are very sorry, we will immediately investigate our internal processes so that this does not happen again. Please forgive for this error,” according to The Guardian.

KFC Germany issued a statement Jerusalem Post Which went into more detail on Thursday. The company said it uses “a semi-automated content creation process linked to calendars that includes national observances.” General The review process, the company said, was not followed properly, and resulted in “an unapproved notification being shared.”

company said mistake “Clearly false, insensitive and unacceptable.”

KFC said, “We understand and respect the gravity and history of this day, and are committed to equality, inclusion and all.”

Given that the alert came because anti-Semitism is on the rise, it’s no surprise that the chicken chain’s ad left a bad taste in many people’s mouths.
