The Princess of Wales, 41, made a surprise visit to the Chelsea Flower Show in London on Monday May 22 after a young fan asked her to sign something. “I can’t write my name, but I can draw,” the Duchess of Cambridge was heard to say, according to People,
The UK native reportedly created a flower for a 7-year-old girl named Ruby, followed by a tree and a pond for two other children. When asked again why she could not sign an autograph, the Duchess of Cornwall replied, “My name is Catherine. I’m not allowed to write my signature, it’s one of those rules.”
Members of the royal family are not supposed to sign for fans due to the risk of their signatures being forged. They sometimes pose for selfies as a substitute, although such photographs are still relatively rare.
In January, the princess posed for a selfie with two onlookers during a visit in Luton, England. That same month, Kate and her husband, Prince Williamtook pictures with around 20 staff members and visitors at Liverpool University Hospital during their first joint appearance of the year.
According to the royal family’s website, there are “no mandated codes of behaviour” for meeting a member of the firm, but “many people wish to follow traditional forms.” The site then lists the protocol for bowing as well as the proper means of address.

Earlier this year, Camilla, 75, thanked a spectator who presented her with a Burger King crown during a visit to Colchester in March.
As a fan handed the paper crown to the Queen, she replied, “Oh, sweetie, that’s very nice of you. Burger King!”
Weeks later, another passerby tried to offer his Burger King crown to the 74-year-old King, but King refused to accept. “It’s for you, if you want it,” said the admirer after shaking Charles’s hand.
“I’m fine,” beamed the former Prince of Wales as he continued through the line.
Earlier this month, Charles was officially crowned king in a coronation ceremony held at Westminster Abbey on 6 May. Kate and William, 40, were both in attendance with their three children: Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5.
